SRC’s Scott McCoubrey named USATF Contributor of the Year

thumbnailusatf-logo1

This is about a month old now, but wanted to make sure  folks saw that Scott McCoubrey was named the USATF Mountain/Ultra Contributor of the year.

For those of us who know Scott, the only thing surprising about this award is that it took so long for it to come his way.   Additionally, those of us who know Scott also recognize this is really an award for both Scott & Liz McCoubrey…as it’s the tandem that does so much for our sport her in the Pacific Northwest.   Clearly, the things Scott (& Liz) does for ultra/trail running here in the Seattle/Puget Sound area is unmatched.  They (along with their trusty Aussie Jack) support/sponsor/direct many of the top races in the region:

And, Scott’s been known to go way above & beyond the normal call of duty in making sure these races go off without a hitch.  Back in 2006, when severe wind storms knocked out power in the Puget Sound for the days/weeks leading up to the Bridle Trails run, Scott & a team of recruits cleared the course by hand.    The Seattle PI had a great story on this, that’s worth checking out.

In addition to sponsoring races, Scott is also a great supporter of runners.  The Teva US Mountain Running team blog has a great summary of the impact that McCoubrey has had in this regard:

Trail runners with previous or current ties to the Seattle Running Company include Ian Torrance, Phil Kochic, Krissy Moehl, Hal Korner, Brian Morrison, Greg Crowther, and Uli Stidl. McCoubrey has played a roll in the success of these and many, many other trail runners.

Personally, I’ve seen how far Scott is willing to go to help an athlete.  When I convinced Adam Lint, an up-and-coming ultra-star and fellow IUP runner, to move out to Seattle so he could train with the Seattle Running Company folks, Scott offered him a job at the store to help support him.  I’m sure there are dozens of stories like this out there.

It’s clear Scott’s impact extends far beyond Seattle as well.  One day this summer while I was sitting at Hayward Field watching the US Olympic Track & Field Trials, I wore a Seattle Running Company shirt.   I must have had a dozen people notice my shirt and walk over to ask “How’s Scott doing” or to ask me to “say HI to McCoubrey” for me.

So, a belated Congratulations to Scott!  And, a much overdo “THANK YOU” for all that you do trail/Ultrarunning in the Northwest.

Bridle Trails Winter Trail Running Festival

This past weekend, I had a chance to get out and run at Bridle Trails in Redmond.  I hadn’t been out there for a while and forgot just how much it makes you feel you are in the middle of nowhere, despite being right in the heart of suburban Seattle.

bridle_trailsAs always, it was muddy & mucky and just plain fun.  Unlike most times I’ve run there, there was about 6 inches of snow & slush this time.  I struggle to run 9 minute miles on a course that I usually cruise 7 minute miles.   I also learned that my dog, Achilles, is much better running through the mud & muck than I am…he hammered me the entire way.

I’m looking forward to participating in the Bridle Trails Winter Trail Running Festival put on by none other than my favorite running store, Seattle Running Company.   There are three races to choose from – 5.2 miles, 10.4 miles, and a full-out 50K.   One of the things I love about these races is the fact that they start at 3:00 PM…which suits me well as I hate running in the morning.

I’m guessing Greg Crowther will be out to run it again this year.  Every year he shows up and just flat out smokes the 50K race.   In 2007, he broke 3:20, running a course record 3:19:40…that’s smoking.  Especially when you consider that the six-person 50K relay record (which includes Scott Jurek, Uli or Trish Steidl, and Scott McCoubrey on it) is only 10 minutes faster.

Anyway, hope to see you out on the Bridle Trails on January 10th…it’s a great way to kick of the new year of racing!

Running at Cougar Mountain

As most trail runners in the Seattle area know, Cougar Mountain is a great place to go for a long run.  It’s the perfect blend of very runnable singletrack trail coupled with some tough climbs that are enough to keep you “honest.”   I’ve never gone there and done a longer run (90+ minutes) and not had it put a hurting on me.

As you may know, the Seattle Running Company puts on a series of races — the Cougar Mountain Trail Run Series – each year.  I ran the 10 mile race there last year and struggled mightily (aka, walked) much of the last 3 miles.

This past weekend, I was able to get out to Cougar and do that same 10-mile loop…on a training run…by myself.  I finished more than 10 minutes faster than I did last year, and felt strong at the end.  While I realize it’s often different come race day, I was encouraged that I’ve made that much progress over the past few months.  Needless to say, I’m looking forward to a great summer/fall of running.
